Petersburg High School’s basketball teams returned home victorious from the region five 2A tournament in Juneau over the weekend. Those were also the last games of the season as the state athletic association has cancelled state championships.

The girls team came from behind to beat Metlakatla 28-25 Friday afternoon, hitting free throws from the foul line for that win. Kaili Simbahon led scoring with 16 points while Ines Larson had nine and Adrianna Stough added six points.

Joe Viechnicki spoke with coach Dino Brock about the end of the season.

Simbahon and Larson were named to the all conference team. Meghyn Parker won an all academic award and Allie Davis and Kasiah Lopez won good sports awards.

Pertersburg’s boys team also had a come from behind win for the region title, topping Haines 52-46 Friday evening in the championship game. Thomas Durkin led scoring for Petersburg in that game with 16 points, Brennan Skeek scored 10 and Rylan Wallace added nine.

Three of the Vikings were named to the all-conference team, Durkin, Wallace and Brayden Larson. Zephrie Whitethorn and Brennan Skeek named to the good sport team and Whitethorn, Larson, Durkin and Wallace were all academic team honorees.
