Petersburg’s emergency operations center announced two more COVID-19 cases Tuesday, driving the community’s active cases to five and total case count to 24.

Tuesday’s additional two cases are Petersburg residents from the same household but are NOT believed to be related to positive tests for a student and parent in the local elementary school announced earlier Tuesday.

Local health officials say this infection may be connected to recent travel to Anchorage. One of the people who tested positive was showing symptoms and contacted the COVID hotline. That person was tested along with another household member who has underlying health issues. Both tested positive and have been directed to quarantine.

The EOC wants to remind the community that free testing is available for people at the airport when returning from other communities in Alaska.
