Petersburg High School’s basketball teams hosted Craig last week for the Vikings’ senior weekend. The Varsity Vikings defeated the Panthers both nights, securing a second seed in the ongoing 2A regional tournament.

The Vikings won Friday’s game 57-to-46. But on Saturday, they absolutely flattened the visiting team 60-to-18. Petersburg seniors Rik Cumps and Hunter Conn were the lead scorers, in what were the final home games of their high school careers.

Rick Brock coaches the boys’ teams. He says Saturday’s game was just the cherry on top of a great season for his senior players.

“I thought that was our best game of the year, really — on both ends, offensively and defensively,” said Brock. “Craig has some very good players and we were able to hold them under double figures in each of the quarters. So, [it was a] nice way to finish out just for the seniors to have a quality game for their last home stint there.”

But last week’s games against Craig meant something completely different for the Lady Vikings. Friday’s game was fairly close: the home team lost 24-to-38. But on Saturday, the Lady Vikings flipped the script on the Panthers, winning 47-to-36. It was their third win of the season.”

Girls’ coach Matt Pawuk says Friday’s narrow loss helped renew his players’ confidence. He says that momentum, combined with some tweaks to their defense, gave them the edge the second night.

“[It was] a really good kind of launching point for for regionals, and good to build a little momentum there, and a nice confidence boost,” said Pawuk. “It was just a really, really good way to kind of finish off the season and for those seniors to finish off their home career.”

The Lady Vikings’ scores from last week bumped them down from three seed to five seed in the regional tournament. KFSK will broadcast Petersburg’s 2A regional games live throughout the week.
