An organization in Petersburg that supports people with cancer will host its annual run/walk this weekend. It’s been 25 years since the nonprofit Beat the Odds held its first fundraising race.

Marlene Cushing is a retired public health nurse in Petersburg. Pia Reilly is a three-time cancer survivor. They have both volunteered with the organization since it was founded in 1990. They sat down with KFSK’s Hannah Flor to talk about the ways Beat the Odds helps those with cancer in Petersburg. They say the run/walk started after several people from Petersburg participated in a similar event in Juneau. Pia Reilly says they were motivated by how the fundraiser increased awareness about the need for cancer support.

The Beat the Odds run/walk is Saturday, April 20 at the Petersburg Community Center. The race starts at 9:am. Registration is at 8:30 with a group warmup at 8:45.
