The Petersburg Borough Assembly will decide tonight whether to apply for a state grant to replace a major float in Petersburg’s South Harbor. The borough would have up to 18 months to complete the project if the grant is awarded.

“C” Float is the longest in the harbor and the only one with an extended finger at the end. It houses yachts and tenders, as well as the occasional small cruise ship. The borough is seeking a $617,000 grant from the state for the replacement project. That would be matched by the borough from its harbor fund. Engineers estimate the project would cost just over $1.3 million total.

In a related proposal tonight, assembly members will consider contracting Alaska-based PND Engineers to help with the project.

The borough assembly will also take a final vote on whether to rezone a vacant lot on Sandy Beach Road. If passed, the lot would be rezoned from rural-residential to single-family residential. Nearby lots are already zoned as single-family, according to the borough.

There will also be a final vote on a few borough budget adjustments. One of the changes would strike $15,000 from the borough’s budgeted expenditures because a public works site survey project was completed under budget. Another would move $90,000 from the borough’s school deferred maintenance fund to its debt service fund, in order to cover school bond payments no longer funded by the state.

Other changes within the property development fund include budgeting $50,000 to install utility connection stubs to lots that the borough wants to sell, about $17,000 to fix library facilities, and requesting less than $10,000 in funds for matching a safe roads program grant.

The Petersburg Borough Assembly meets tonight at 6 p.m. in the Assembly Chambers. KFSK will broadcast that meeting live.
