A Petersburg man has returned to jail after allegedly violating the conditions of his release.
Alejandro “Alex” Melendez Aguilar, 45, was arrested by Alaska State Troopers last December for allegedly sharing child sexual abuse material. He was indicted by a grand jury the day after Christmas, and faces 10 felony charges for possession and distribution of child pornography. Aguilar pleaded not guilty in January.
In April, Aguilar was released from custody at a Juneau jail and placed under house arrest in Petersburg after posting a $10,000 bail. Per his release agreement with the court, he was not allowed to use any devices that could connect to the internet.
Aguilar was arrested late last month for allegedly breaking those terms. Authorities received a report that a private social media message claimed to be from him. The message stated he was using a family member’s cell phone.
Aguilar was arraigned through the Prince of Wales Island courthouse on Aug. 30. His legal representation was not present.
He was transferred from Petersburg to Lemon Creek Correctional Center in Juneau last week, and is there under a $50,000 bond. Aguilar’s attorney didn’t immediately respond to KFSK’s request for comment.
Aguilar’s next omnibus hearing is scheduled for Sept. 29 at the Petersburg courthouse.
