Petersburg High School’s wrestling season is nearing its end, as the team is heading to the regional competition in Sitka this weekend.

Head coach James Valentine spoke with KFSK’s Taylor Heckart about the season so far, and how the team fared at their most recent tournament in Wrangell. He said that tournament was, “the best the kids have looked all year.”

Listen here:

Valentine highlighted the performance of 132-pound junior Fyscher Humphrey. As the only girl on the team, Valentine said she doesn’t have many opportunities to practice with other girls at her level.

“She, unfortunately, is not set up the best for success.” Valentine said.

At the Wrangell tournament, she “found a switch,” and consistently won matches against other girls. She placed second in her weight class in the tournament.

Valentine also recognized 145-pound junior Tanner Caulum, who went up against Wrangell’s Jackson Carney.

“He was going against arguably one of the top three wrestlers in all the state– and when I say all of the state, I meant like in all weight classes,” Valentine said.

During the match, Caulum successfully flipped Carney onto his back, something that hasn’t happened to the wrestler in years.

“Everybody’s breath just went out,” Valentine said.

While Caulum didn’t win that match, Valentine said he was proud of that performance.

The regional competition takes place in Sitka, Dec. 12-13.
