Petersburg’s high school track and field season is officially underway. The first meet took place in Ketchikan late last month.
Head coach Casey Gates said training earlier in the season was challenging for the team due to the snow in Petersburg.
“We had to spend a lot of time indoors,” Gates said. “But cleared up and things are looking good now that we’ve been able to train.”
Assistant coach Keely Ware said Petersburg brought 37 students to Ketchikan last month. They competed against teams from Craig, Haines, Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan, Sitka, and Wrangell.
Petersburg’s track team took home 15 top-three finishes in various events. That included a first place finish by the men’s 4×200 relay team, which included Brayden-Kai Tucker, Nolan Lutomski, Noah Pawuk, and Ben Kandoll.
Ware said multiple athletes broke their personal records, and the men’s 4×100 relay team nearly broke Petersburg High School’s all-time record. Brayden-Kai Tucker, Alex Holmgrain, Noah Pawuk, and Jakob Preisler took third place with a time of 47.57 seconds.
Both coaches said they felt the team had a strong first meet.
The track team’s next meet will be in Juneau on May 15-16. The regional tournament will be a week later in Ketchikan.
