Alaska’s primary election is Aug. 18. Races for state House and Senate, governor, and U.S. House and Senate.

It’s a crowded field, with 17 candidates for governor, 15 for U.S. House and 16 for U.S. Senate.

Both of Petersburg’s state House and Senate seats are up for election, but incumbent Republican Sen. Bert Stedman is running unopposed. Incumbent Independent Rep. Rebecca Himschoot has two challengers: Republican Kenny Skaflestad and Alston C. Evans, whose party is undeclared.

The primary will not be ranked choice voting. Voters will choose one candidate in each race and the top four vote-getters will move on to the general election in November, which will be ranked choice.

There will be one ballot measure on the primary ballot. If approved by voters, Ballot Measure 1 would limit how much people and groups can give to local and state campaigns. Ballot Measure 2, which would repeal ranked choice voting, will appear in November’s general election.

Petersburg has one polling place, the Parks and Rec community center at 105 Charles W St. Polls are open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m on Tuesday.

To find interviews with candidates in each race, you can find an online voter guide here.

The first batch of results will be released around 9 p.m., and the Division of Election expects to certify the election by Aug. 31.
