So far, 17 residents have declared candidacy for Petersburg’s municipal election. There are multiple seats in local office available, and just a few days left for interested candidates to get their name on October’s ballot.

As of Friday afternoon there are no contested races.

Scott Newman has filed to run for the 1-year seat on the Petersburg Borough Assembly. Newman was appointed to Mayor Bob Lynn’s assembly seat last year after Lynn won the mayoral race between the two. Appointments last until the next municipal election, so Newman’s seat is back up for election.

He is the only incumbent to file for Assembly so far. Vice Mayor Jeigh Stanton Gregor and Assembly Member Rob Schwartz’s 3-year terms both expire this fall.

Sarah Fine-Walsh and Tom Kowalske have filed for the two 3-year Assembly positions. They both currently serve on the planning commission.

The planning commission has five seats up for election. Incumbents Heather O’Neil and Jim Floyd are running for 3-year terms, joining Chris Fry in the race.

There are three seats open on the library board. Incumbent Lizzie Thompson and Gina Esposito have joined the race along with Marilyn Menish-Meucci.

Incumbent Greg Browning has filed for a 1-year seat on the public safety board. Incumbents Mark Tuccillo and John Lichtenberger are running for 3-year seats.

There are two hospital board seats up this year. Hospital board chair Jerod Cook is running for a 3-year term.

There are two parks and recreation board seats available. Thomas Fine-Walsh is running for a 3-year term.

There are two open seats on the school board. Katherine Holmlund is running for a 3-year term.

That leaves six positions in local office without interested candidates — but there’s still time to file for the election.

Petersburg residents can submit the required paperwork to the Borough until 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 25. You can find more info online at the borough’s website, petersburgak.gov.

Petersburg’s election is Oct. 6.

EDITOR’S NOTE: This story was updated with new filings on Friday afternoon. Four more people filed for candidacy.
