The candidacy filing window for Petersburg’s municipal election closed Tuesday. Several prospective candidates submitted their papers just before the deadline.
There are 23 positions up for election this fall. A few seats remain vacant without interested candidates.
Only the race for Petersburg Borough Assembly is contested this year, with six candidates vying for three seats.
Don Koenigs is challenging incumbent Scott Newman for the single 1-year term.
Sarah Fine-Walsh, Tom Kowalske, Donna Marsh and incumbent Jeigh Stanton Gregor are each running for one of the two 3-year seats. Assembly Member Rob Schwartz did not file for reelection.
As for the uncontested races, here’s the rundown:
Both School Board incumbents, Katherine Holmlund and Marc Taylor, are running unopposed to keep their seats.
All three Public Safety Advisory Board incumbents — Greg Browning, Mark Tuccillo and John Lichtenberger — are running unopposed to keep their seats.
Janet Kvernvik joined incumbent Jerod Cook in the uncontested race for Hospital Board. Marlene Cushing did not file for reelection.
Neither Ambre Burrell nor Greg Kowalski filed for another term on the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board. But Thomas Fine-Walsh and Tyler Thain are running for the seats, unopposed.
The Library Advisory Board has three candidates running for three seats. Incumbents Lizzie Thompson and Marilyn Menish-Meucci are joined by Gina Esposito in the race. Mary Ellen Anderson did not file for reelection.
For the Harbor & Ports Advisory Board, John Murgas and incumbent Andrew Kittams are running for election. Joel Randrup and Scott Roberge did not file for reelection.
Three incumbents are running for Petersburg’s Planning Commission — Jim Floyd, Heather O’Neil and Chris Fry. Mika Cline did not file for reelection.
That leaves vacant a 1-year term and a 2-year term on the commission, as well as a 3-year harbor board seat, without interested applicants.
The empty seats on the commission could grow, too. Sarah Fine-Walsh currently serves as a commissioner, but is running for Assembly. Elected officials cannot hold more than one position at a time.
Candidates can withdraw from the election through Friday, Aug. 28. More residents can file with the Borough to run as write-in candidates until the Oct. 2 deadline. Write-in candidacy forms are available inside the municipal building and online.
The municipal election is Oct. 6, and the last day to register to vote is Sept. 6. Find more information on the Borough’s website.
