Hunters have harvested 55 legal bull moose in the fall RM038 hunt near Petersburg, Wrangell and Kake as of Wednesday, Sept. 30.

The central Southeast season opened Sept. 15 and runs for a month. It’s a restricted antler hunt, and only bulls with specific antler configurations can be taken.

The highest harvests come from Kupreanof Island with 20 bulls, the Stikine River with 13 bulls, and Kuiu Island with 10 bulls.

Five have been harvested that are sub-legal due to insufficient brow tines or damaged antlers — two on Kupreanof Island, one on Kuiu Island, one on Wrangell Island, and one on another mainland area in Game Unit 1B.

The fall moose hunt covers half a dozen main islands in Unit 3 plus several smaller ones, Unit 1-B on the mainland, and the extreme southern portion of Unit 1-C, also on the mainland.

Last year, hunters took a record 145 bull moose, which outperformed the previous record in 2023.

Successful hunters must submit a completed permit report and the front teeth and antlers to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game within five days of the kill.
