Petersburg schools close temporarily for heavy snow loads

Petersburg’s schools reopened Thursday after being closed earlier this week due to heavy snow loads on the rooftops. The structures were deemed unsafe for students after leaks and other red flags were noticed when staff returned to the buildings after the winter break.

Mitkof Middle School’s robotics team wins a 1st place at regional tournament

Mitkof Middle School’s robotics team in Petersburg won first place in a category at a regional tournament in Juneau and will be heading on to a state competition in Anchorage.

Petersburg gets nearly two feet of new snow sinking a boat and keeping borough workers busy through the week

Borough workers scrambled, attending to roads, power lines, and the harbors all day Saturday and Sunday. A 40 foot troller sank from the new snow and another 50 foot vessel almost did.

Petersburg School Board sees a light agenda for last meeting of the year

The Petersburg School Board will be meeting in regular session Tuesday at 6 p.m. and there is a very light agenda. There are no items under new or old business. The meeting will focus on reports from the superintendent, school principals, and the activities director.

Petersburg School District’s new music teacher prepares students for in-person winter concert

Petersburg middle and high school bands will be performing in winter concerts Dec. 14, 15 at the Wright Auditorium. The high school band will take the stage Tuesday at 7 p.m. and the middle school on Wednesday at 7 p.m. Last year, the students couldn’t perform in front of a crowd because of the COVID pandemic. They are able to this year with mitigation measures in place and they will be led by new music director Charlie O’Brien. He’s been teaching in Petersburg for about a month.
