TV chef cooks up halibut cheeks in the rain

British celebrity chef Phil Vickery filmed two TV episodes this week highlighting sustainable seafood caught in the waters of Southeast Alaska. The Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute brought Vickery to the region for an eight-day visit and a few fishing trips around Petersburg and Excursion Inlet.

Retired teacher publishes collection of poems

Local resident Sally Riemer has published her first book. It’s called “Playing with poetry in Petersburg” and contains a collection of Riemer’s poetry from the past three decades. Riemer, a retired teacher, is one of two writer laureates for Petersburg this year. She self-published the book through an online company called X libris and talked about her poems at the public library Monday. Joe Viechnicki spoke with Riemer about her book.

City hires new Parks and Recreation director

Petersburg’s municipal parks and recreation department has a new director. Donny Hayes, 32, moved to Petersburg almost one year ago to run a local charter sportfishing business with his father. Hayes, originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, worked in the recreation field for eight years in Rexburg, Idaho and Washington City, Utah before moving here. And he’s familiar with Petersburg recreation facilities after working as a lifeguard at Petersburg’s pool for the past year. Joe Viechnicki spoke with Hayes about his past experience and starting up the job in Petersburg.
