Native Corporation finds Haida canoe near Kasaan

The Sealaska Corporation has uncovered an old Haida canoe on the corporation’s timber land near the Prince of Wales Island community of Kasaan. The partially-finished canoe may be centuries old and could provide a rare glimpse of canoe construction techniques using traditional tools.

Fishing closed on Hidden Falls chums

A hatchery run of chum salmon that has produced big early season catches for Southeast’s commercial purse seine fleet is just a fraction of its former self this year. Chum returns to the Hidden Falls hatchery on eastern Baranof Island this summer have been low – so low that seiners will not likely be fishing for those chums again this year and hatchery managers are concerned about getting enough fish back to keep the run going.

Little leaguers play under sunny skies in Petersburg

Six teams of nine and ten year old Little League baseball players took the field in sunny Petersburg over the weekend for their Southeast tournament. All-star teams from Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan, Wrangell and Prince of Wales joined the host Petersburg for four days of games and clinics. Joe Viechnicki stopped by the ballfields for the opening ceremony and put together this audio postcard.

Stikine, Taku kings coming in below forecasts

Southeast’s commercial fishing fleets this May had no opportunity for a directed fishery targeting Chinook salmon returning to the Stikine and Taku rivers, two trans-boundary rivers in central and northern Southeast. Run forecasts going into the season were not high enough to open fisheries, and the runs appear to be coming in well below those forecasts. However, there are a few signs of possible improvement in future years.
