A new North Harbor is number one on Petersburg’s wish-list for state and federal funding. The City Council put that project at the top of draft capital priorities list Monday night. The new library remains at number two, followed by a new roof for Mountain View Manor, police station renovations, and a marine service facility.

Petersburg City Council last night took a few steps to try and reduce operating losses at Mountain View Manor Assisted Living. That included the first reading of a rent increase, and the re-payment of sixty-four thousand dollars in federal development funds.

School officials in Petersburg want to have a drug dog visit the district. That’s one of several ideas the School Board is discussing as it struggles to address concerns over substance abuse among teens. At a special meeting late last week, board members directed staff to put together specific procedures for implementing existing policies that allow targeted student drug testing and searches. In the longer-term, some members want to reconsider the possibility of random drug testing for athletes. The board also expressed interest in expanding anti-drug education.

A Petersburg couple attended last month’s Medal of Honor ceremony in the East Room of the White House. The ceremony honored Staff Sergeant Salvatore Giunta, the first living service member from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to receive the medal of honor, for rescuing fellow soldiers in a firefight in October 2007 in Northeastern Afghanistan. Giunta is the nephew of Petersburg resident Madonna Judge-Parks. She and her husband R.D. made the trip to the nation’s Capitol and spoke with KFSK’s Joe Viechnicki about the experience.

Vessel haul-out facilities, harbor reconstruction and repair work on aging city facilities were a few of the items on a long list of capital project needs brought to Petersburg’s city council Monday. The council will wait until next week to choose which projects will be highest on the city’s priority list.
