Alaska Congressman Don Young is hoping to block U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval of genetically engineered salmon, or at least require industry to label the new farmed fish product. Young has introduced two separate pieces of legislation in response to a Massachusetts company’s application for FDA approval.

A new committee is meeting this fall in Petersburg to come up with specific ideas the city can pursue to help the town's fishing industry. The group includes fishermen as well as representation from local processors, support services, educators and the city.

City employees vented more frustration at Petersburg’s city council Tuesday night over the lack of a new collective bargaining agreement. Employees represented by the Petersburg Municipal Employees Association last week rejected the city’s latest offer of a status quo contract with no increase in wages or benefits. Employees this week asked the city council to come back with a better offer.

There’s one less option for hauling out and repairing boats in Southeast this winter. Petersburg Shipwrights is closed until March. The business has been a popular choice for boat work among the region’s commercial fleets. Petersburg officials and boat owners say the news has added urgency to the need for a new marine haul-out and work yard in town.

City employees have rejected the city of Petersburg’s latest contract offer. Members of the Petersburg Municipal Employees Association, which covers the bulk of city employees, voted Wednesday night to reject an offer of a status quo contract with no increases in wages or benefits over the next three years.
