It could be a while before the Alaska State Troopers announce findings on last week’s police shooting of a sword-wielding man in Petersburg. For the time being, troopers are saying little about the death of 41-year-old Richard Whidby as their investigation continues.
Petersburg’s City Manager this week said he thought the shooting was unfortunate but justified based on his knowledge of the incident. Accounts from the officer involved, witnesses and some of Whidby’s friends and neighbors suggest Whidby was a friendly but troubled man who was acting strangely and may have been using drugs before he charged police with a sword.

As their final day started, Seniors reflected on their last few hours of high school (ever!) and had a few words of advice for the younger students they were leaving behind.

The City of Petersburg now has a new, online, interactive map that allows users to get an aerial view of a street, block or home, and access to tax assessment and zoning information for any property in the City.

The Petersburg Republican who is challenging Representative Peggy Wilson in the Primary says he’s been travelling District two, talking to voters. Steven Samuelson grew up in Petersburg and spent 21 years commercial fishing. He currently works at Hammer and Wikan hardware, where he’s a board member. Samuelson has also worked for Sitka-based Allen Marine. He’s relatively new to politics and ran against Wilson once before in 2008. Samuelson currently serves on Petersburg’s Planning and Zoning commission. Matt Lichtenstein recently asked Samuelson about the legislative session and his campaign plans.

State representative Peggy Wilson was happy with the outcome of this year’s legislative session. Among other things, the capital budget included more than 34 million dollars in project funding for her district, which includes Wrangell, Petersburg, Sitka and several smaller towns. The budget is still awaiting Governor Sean Parnell’s approval. Wilson met with Parnell to voice support for the funding, which she and Sitka Senator Bert Stedman had put into the bill for the district.
Wilson is running for re-election to her 6th term in the State House this fall. She’s also facing a 2nd primary challenge from Steven Samuelson of Petersburg.
