Environmental and tourism groups along with the Organized Village of Kake are suing to extend nationwide roadless area protection to Southeast Alaska’s Tongass National Forest. A lawsuit filed Tuesday in the U.S. district court in Juneau argues that the 2003 exemption of the Tongass was illegal.

Petersburg’s City Council will decide what to do next in their search for a city manager tonight. The councilors are scheduled to discuss their three finalists in executive session during Tonight’s regular meeting. They might end up choosing a manager, or they might continue the process. For the third part of KFSK’s series on the three finalists, Matt Lichtenstein has a profile of interim city manager Bob Prunella:

Petersburg’s City Council will discuss the merits of its three city manager finalists in an executive session at Monday night’s meeting. Some councilors have said Alaskan experience is a key quality they’d like to see in a manager. Scott Hahn is one of the two finalists who have worked in the state. Matt Lichtenstein has this profile of Hahn for the second part of KFSK’s series on the council choices for manager.

Petersburg’s City Council will take another major step in the city manager search Monday night. Councilors are scheduled to discuss their three finalists in a closed door executive session. Afterwards, they could decide to hire one of the three or do more interviews or broaden the search. The city has interviewed each of the finalists by phone or in person and so has KFSK public radio. A proposed haul-out and boat yard at scow bay could be managed by the City of Petersburg with some on-site help from the private sector. That’s the general concept favored by local residents and officials who have been planning the project. They discussed management and environmental issues, and fine-tuned some of the facility’s features in their latest meeting. Matt Lichtenstein has more on the discussion.
