The city of Petersburg will be looking for a new city manager. The city council Monday voted to negotiate a settlement for the end of city manager Rich Underkofler’s employment. That was despite more than an hour of passionate public testimony urging the council to put aside their differences and keep Underkofler. Councilors held their discussion in a closed-door executive session and did not give a reason for their decision last night.

Two Petersburg high school teachers received statewide honors this spring. The Alaska Society for Technology in Education chose social studies and videography teacher Jim Engell as its teacher of the year. Science teacher Vic Trautman was named Alaska’s outstanding earth science teacher of the year by The National Association of Geoscience teachers. For a little over a year, thousands of Alaskan residents have been taking advantage of an energy rebate program that reimburses homeowners for retrofitting their homes.
