Council split on water pipeline fix

The Petersburg City Council last night was unable to agree on a fix for the under-performing pipeline from the city’s Cabin Creek reservoir. The city is looking at numerous solutions to increasing the water that flows through the line, and removing a bacterial growth on the inside of the conduit. However council members were split last night on what to do about the portion of the pipeline nearest the Cabin Creek dam and they’ll reconsider the issue later this month.

Native American Heritage day celebrated

Americans across the country are marking today as the first Native American heritage day. Congress and the president this fall approved a resolution designating the Friday after thanksgiving as an occasion to recognize the contributions of native Americans. Petersburg resident Ross Nannauck the third is putting up a display downtown to get the word out about the new heritage day. Joe Viechnicki spoke with Nannuack about what meaning the occasion has for him.

Couple promotes historic printing and paper techniques

A Petersburg couple is helping to preserve historic techniques of paper-arts and print-making. In a basement studio, retired Petersburg librarian Joyce Schultz creates unique, hand-bound books and designs with paper. Retired printing engineer and consultant Peter Schultz puts ink to paper by hand-setting, individual metal letters and carved or etched designs and running them through a press. The western letterpress process was invented by Johanes Gutenberg, a 15th century German who was famous for printing the first bible with movable type. The couple plan to teach classes and share their hobby with others. They’ll hold an open house this Saturday (11/29) from 10 to 2 at their studio at 830 Mitkof Highway. New artwork goes on display

It’s a big night for new artwork in Petersburg, with a museum show opening and two gallery openings following tonight’s Christmas tree lighting. Joe Viechnicki talked with some of the local artists about the work that’ll be on display around town tonight.

School Board proposes local funding plan

Petersburg school officials are proposing a long-term, local funding plan for the district. It calls on the city to gradually ratchet-up local education spending over the next decade. The idea is to plan ahead for the anticipated loss of federal funds. The School Board and City Council met in an informal work session to discuss the issue Monday.
