Petersburg land grant bills move out of committees

Legislation that would boost the amount of the Petersburg borough’s state land grant moved out of committees in both the Alaska House and Senate this week. Supporters of those bills are making the case that additional state land would help make the new borough more self-sufficient.

Southeast’s first crab fisheries of the year set to open

The first fisheries of the year for many Southeast fishermen are about to get started. That’s the Tanner and golden king crab fisheries, which open February 17. Managers are predicting a healthy harvest for Tanners and another slow year for king crab.

Petersburg assembly considers charter change votes

Local voters could be deciding some changes to the Petersburg borough charter this fall. Petersburg’s borough assembly has started a discussion about possible charter changes that could impact sales and property tax rate decisions, membership on the planning and zoning commission and other areas.

Petersburg continues with self-pay paving process

The Petersburg borough still plans to offer a self-pay paving option for some neighborhood streets this year. The borough assembly Monday continued with changes to an ordinance for a Local Improvement District. That’s an existing process in borough law that allows residents to petition for a new service like water, sewer, electricity or, in this case, paved streets, if residents in an area agree to pay the cost of that project. The assembly approved the second reading of changes to that local law.
