Petersburg will receive $8 million in federal funding to complete plans for upgrading the town’s wastewater treatment facility. The Borough must upgrade its wastewater treatment system to meet tighter water quality standards. Officials anticipate it will be an expensive project. Alaska’s U.S. Senator Lisa Murkowski secured the funds for Petersburg in an appropriations bill that President Trump signed on Jan. 23.

Petersburg’s Borough Assembly has agreed to transfer money left over from last year’s budget into funds for the town’s aquatic center and assisted living facility. The Assembly also approved ordinances that would respectively raise harbor fees, zone a tidelands parcel, and combine some land in town to create a sellable lot for residential development; each of those ordinances will be considered by the Assembly again at a future meeting.

The Central Council of Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska’s broadband venture, Tidal Network, is building three communications towers in Petersburg with money from a large federal grant. The project has received some community pushback, with some residents questioning the process.

The Assembly will also consider increasing various harbor fees, per the recommendation by the harbor department and local harbor and ports advisory board. Harbor fees were last raised in 2022.
