Petersburg locals take a hike to learn about invasive plants

It’s invasive species awareness week in Alaska, an official reminder to report, prevent, and learn about the state’s problematic plants. In Petersburg, locals learned how to identify, and deal with, certain invasive plant species cropping up along a popular trailhead during a guided hike. The educational plant walk was part of the new Friends of Raven’s Roost Trail program.

Canoes launch from Petersburg on Journey to Celebration

A group of canoes from several different communities embarked from Petersburg on May 24 for a traditional Journey to the Celebration festival in Juneau. Dozens of people gathered in Petersburg’s South Harbor to witness the inaugural launch of the community’s first canoe in over a century. The local tribe says the launch itself was also a historic first for the community.
