King salmon fishing on Petersburg’s Blind Slough opens to all recreational anglers, City Creek release site permanently discontinued

It’s the first time in a few years that both residents and nonresidents can fish for hatchery king salmon in the slough’s freshwater. Anglers could be interviewed by Fish and Game staff researching there for a survey program this summer.

The City Creek release site near Petersburg is permanently discontinued as of this year. It’s now just part of the larger fishing district, which is closed to retention until mid-July.

Southeast Alaska king salmon sport fishery reopens to nonresidents following July closure

Nonresidents will be allowed to sport fish for wild king salmon in Southeast Alaska again, starting August 4. During the July closure, fishery managers saw less resident harvest. They also found anglers had been catching more hatchery salmon than expected, which leaves more wild fish available to harvest within the allocation.

Spawning kings get royal treatment

Hatchery king salmon near Petersburg got a little extra help making it to their spawning grounds this summer. Low projected returns triggered the closure of the popular freshwater sport fishery that targets the kings. And, as KFSK’s Hannah Flor reports, the projections inspired managers to give the fish some unconventional help.
