A proposal headed to the Alaska Board of Fisheries next year would change how a popular run of king salmon is managed near Petersburg. The town’s Fish and Game Advisory Committee approved a draft management plan for king salmon reared at Crystal Lake Hatchery, about 17 miles south of town.

Petersburg residents got a chance to weigh in on the planned closure of a king salmon sport fishery at a meeting last week. The hatchery-based sport fishery at Blind River Rapids won’t open this summer because of low projected returns. Those returning salmon, or broodstock, are used to raise new fish.

Sport fishermen won’t be able to fish for king salmon at a popular slough near Petersburg this summer because of low projected returns. But anglers in boats will be able to fish for kings in the saltwater at the mouth of the slough. As KFSK’s Hannah Flor reports, some fishermen are frustrated with the plan.
