PETERSBURG-AK School officials in Petersburg want to have a drug dog visit the district. That’s one of several ideas the School Board is discussing as it struggles to address concerns over substance abuse among teens. At a special meeting late last week, board members directed staff to put together specific procedures for implementing existing policies that allow targeted student drug testing and searches. In the longer-term, some members want to reconsider the possibility of random drug testing for athletes. The board also expressed interest in expanding anti-drug education.
