Petersburg-AK Boaters in the Wrangell Narrows south of Petersburg could see more bundles of logs rafted up and towed through the tight waterway south to a sawmill in Klawock in the next few years. The U.S. Forest Service is applying for permits that would allow a company to gather log rafts at an anchorage along the Woewodski Island shoreline commonly called “The Pothole.” Its also an area fished by some of Petersburg’s Dungeness crab fleet and they’re concerned about bark potentially ruining crab habitat. Various government agencies and stakeholders are trying to come up with conditions to allow log raft storage in the pothole again.
