PETERSBURG, ALASKA
The plan would also keep Petersburg in the same Senate district as Sitka. It would add all of Prince of Wales Island and most Southeast villages.

The council voted unanimously in favor of a resolution describing the plan. It’s called “Native North” and was one of two submitted by Juneau’s municipal government.

The resolution calls for one change. Community Development Director Leo Luczak says it takes plans for a Petersburg borough into account.

"There’s an area to the north, by Hobart Bay, that would be within the proposed borough boundaries. And they asked that this area be included, should a borough be improved. Then we would all be in the same house district."

Petersburg council members testified against Alaska Redistricting Board plans during a Tuesday hearing at city hall.

One of those plans puts Petersburg in a House district with downtown Juneau. All have the town share a Senate district with Interior or Gulf of Alaska communities. Some would have broken up Mitkof Island and separated Kupreanof from Petersburg.

Petersburg now shares a House district with Sitka and Wrangell. The three towns share a Senate district with Ketchikan and eastern Prince of Wales.
