Opponents and supporters of a proposed timber sale near Petersburg weighed in at a public meeting this month. The large, U.S. Forest Service project would allow loggers to cut between 25 and 53 million board feet of timber from Kupreanof Island, just west of Petersburg. In the hour long subsistence hearing, critics of the plan testified that it removed too much wildlife habitat from an area that’s already been heavily logged.
