A competition that Petersburg kids wait for every year is happening this weekend. The Humpy 500 go-cart race will be held on Saturday at 3 p.m. on North Nordic Drive.

The winners of this year’s Canned Salmon Classic will also be announced.

For the race, kids decorate go-carts which are usually made out of empty oil drums; they dress up in costumes and then race down Petersburg’s main street.

Rexanne Stafford is the Safety Manager at Petersburg Fisheries Incorporated or PFI, which is one of the event sponsors.

She spoke with Angela Denning about the details.

North Nordic Drive, between the PFI Hill and Dolphin Street, will be closed from 2:00 pm to 4:30 pm for the go-cart race.

After the race, there is a hotdog party for the race participants at PFI’s cook house.
