This year’s Paddle Battle ball cap is one perk for participants.

Look out for kayakers and stand-up paddle boarders in the Wrangell Narrows this Saturday, July 15. The fourth annual Paddle Battle in the Narrows will be raising money for new wheelchairs at Petersburg Medical Center. Participants pay an entry fee, gather donations and then paddle their way from Papke’s Landing, Scow Bay or the harbors to Sandy Beach. The money goes to the Petersburg Medical Center Foundation, which has been paying for some capital project needs at the hospital. Joe Viechnicki spoke with PMC Foundation secretary and treasurer Sarah Holmgrain about that foundation and this year’s fund raising effort.

Again, paddlers will be leaving Papke’s Landing at 8 a.m. Saturday, July 15 and around 11 a.m. from Scow Bay. Participants can sign up online on the Medical Center’s website or in person at the business office. A safety meeting is planned for 5:30 p.m. Friday, July 14 in the Dorothy Ingle conference room at the medical center.
