Seven wrestlers from Petersburg High School will be heading to the state tournament this weekend after taking some of the top spots at the region five Southeast tournament in Ketchikan last Friday and Saturday.
The boys team was fourth behind Mt. Edgecumbe, Craig and Wrangell. The girls were second behind Mt. Edgecumbe.
Petersburg had two region champs. Teagen Schwartz took first at 126 pounds, pinning his opponent from Mt. Edgecumbe in the first period of the championship match of the boy’s tournament. Jolyn Toyomura took first at 113 pounds in the girl’s tournament. The Vikings also had some second and fourth place finishers. Joe Viechnicki spoke with coach Dan Van Swearingen about his teams’ weekend.
Also at the regional tournament Josh Coonrad was fourth at 113 and Koren Sperl took fourth at 160. The state tournament is this Friday and Saturday in Anchorage.
