The Petersburg High School boys basketball team ended the season on a winning note, finishing fourth at the 2A state tournament in Anchorage Saturday.

The Vikings beat the Cordova Wolverines 51-49 in the game for fourth place Saturday morning. Thomas Durkin and Gunnar Payne both scored 12 points for Petersburg in that game and Mark Neidiffer had 11.

Petersburg opened up with a 43-32 loss to Tok Thursday and then followed that up with a 53-39 win over Hooper Bay Friday. Joe Viechnicki spoke with coach Rick Brock about the three games, starting with the matchup for fourth place with Cordova.

In individual honors, Gunnar Payne led the 2A tournament in rebounds and he was named to the all-tournament team. Charlie Christensen and Koby Pennington won good sports awards.

Petersburg’s players of the game were Dale Strong against Tok, Payne for the Hooper Bay game and Thomas Durkin against Cordova.

The Metlakatla Chiefs, runners up to Petersburg last year, took the state championship this year with a 49-45 win over Unalaska Saturday night.
