Small town life, relationships in commercial fishing families and the impacts of Individual Fishing Quota on a community are a few of the themes in a new book of fiction based on Petersburg. Christi Slaven, former fisherman and teacher published her first book in 2018, called “Home Is Where The Fish Are.”

Slaven taught history, language and other subjects for 24 years and fished with her husband and two daughters during the summers. Some of the characters are familiar names in Petersburg, former radio hosts Emily Merriam and Harold Bergman along with former high school principal Syd Wright. The other characters are fictional but will seem familiar to local residents. Joe Viechnicki spoke with Slaven about her writing.
