Petersburg High School’s basketball season is underway. The Vikings and Lady Vikings hosted Wrangell last weekend with the boys starting out with two wins against the Wolves and the girls losing two games to the visitors.

The Vikings varsity won 74-45 on Friday and 63-43 on Saturday. Top scorer for Petersburg on Friday was Thomas Durkin with 23 points while Brayden Larson added 20.

On Saturday, Brennan Skeek led scoring for Petersburg with 13, Mattias Volk and Gunnar Payne each had 10 points, Durkin scored nine and Larson put in eight.

Joe Viechnicki spoke with boys coach Rick Brock about the start of the season.

The boys junior varsity team also won two games against Wrangell 57-25 and 51-18.

Meanwhile the girls varsity lost two games, 57-37 the first night and 61-51 the next.

Kaili Simbahon was top scorer for the Lady Vikings with 17 points on Friday and 18 on Saturday. Adrianna Stough scored nine points the first night and Allie Davis added 14 on Saturday.

Despite the losses, girls coach Dino Brock is happy with how his team played.

Both teams next play at the Rally the Regions Tournament in Anchorage starting January 1st.
