The Petersburg School board is meeting Tuesday at 6 p.,m. via RingCentral videoconference.

Petersburg’s School Board Tuesday will be meeting via video conference to go over next year’s budget. Finance Director, Karen Morrison, will present the board with the details of the budget, which includes about $8.8 million in revenues and $8.7 million in expenditures.

The school board will discuss what senior graduation will look like this year. Meeting in large groups is not allowed in order to prevent the spread of the COVID virus so the district plans on having a vehicle parade. Superintendent Erica Kludt-Painter says this will involve a parade of the students in their cars and the district will be releasing more details later on.

Kludt-Painter will be discussing what the start of the school in the fall might look like. The State has come up with a framework of how districts can plan for that, which is called Alaska’s Smart Start 2020 for K-12 Schools.

The school board will hear a presentation about the district’s wellness committee. Committee member, Ginger Evans, will explain what the committee did this year and about the district’s healthy living grant. The group coordinated getting Nick the Ninja Warrior to Petersburg. They also helped get the warped wall built for the event and held a spaghetti feed.

The school board will hear about the proposed reorganization of middle and high school science courses. Principal Rick Dormer will present the changes, which align with the Next Generation Science Standards adopted by the State of Alaska.

New hires for the district will be confirmed at the meeting. Former School Board President, Mara Lutomski was hired as the superintendent and board executive administrative assistant. She starts the job July 1.

Ralph Johnston was hired as Director of Maintenance and Facilities effective July 1.

Vanessa Miller will be the new 5th grade teacher in August. And Bridey Short will be the new 6th grade teacher for next year.

Also at the meeting, the school board members will hear administrative reports from the superintendent, the principals, the activities director, and the maintenance director. The school board meets Tuesday at 6 p.m. via RingCentral teleconference. KFSK will broadcast it live.
