Petersburg High School’s baseball team opened up their 2021 season with three road games against Sitka last week. The Vikings lost to the Wolves last Wednesday 14-2 and dropped both games of a doubleheader Thursday 10-3 and 9-2.

The team had no season last year with the pandemic and hasn’t played competitively since the regional tournament in 2019. But Petersburg’s head coach Jim Engell was pleasantly surprised by how well his team hit in the opening series and notes the Vikings had leads in a couple of the games before Sitka pulled ahead on Petersburg’s errors. Joe Viechnicki spoke with Engell about his team’s opening games.

Petersburg hosts Ketchikan this week at 4 p.m. Thursday, along with noon and 4 p.m. Friday at the ballfield. PHS baseball, as it has other seasons, is playing the division one schools from larger Southeast towns during the regular season. But this year the team is hoping to play well enough to qualify for an at-large berth for the first ever division two state tournament.
