Petersburg High School’s volleyball team heads to the regional tournament in Haines this week. The Vikings are the fourth seed and open up play Friday afternoon against fifth seeded Metlakatla.

Competition during the regular season has been disrupted by Petersburg’s COVID outbreak, which led to the cancelation of a seeding tournament here at the start of the month and a home series against Wrangell this past weekend. Instead, Petersburg played intrasquad games in front of parents and honored ten seniors on the varsity.

Joe Viechnicki spoke with head coach Jaime Cabral about the challenging season and the regional tournament.

The Vikings open up the tournament at 3 p.m. Friday against Metlakatla. It’s double elimination. If they win that game they’ll play the number one seed from Klawock at 8:15 p.m. Friday. The top two teams earn berths at the state championships in early December in Anchorage.
