School started Tuesday for most students in Petersburg. Several new teachers are joining the Petersburg School District this year. Jolie Norman is Petersburg’s new first grade teacher. She moved here from Dutch Harbor, where she taught for two years. Norman has a background in social work. But during a stint as a nanny in New York City, she realized she wanted to work with kids. She talked with KFSK’s Hannah Flor about why she loves teaching younger elementary students.

KFSK has been airing conversations with new teachers during the first week of school. You can find Hannah Flor’s interview with new high school math teacher Megan Smith here, new 5th grade teacher Gus Pennington here, and new 4th grade teacher Sarah Paulsen here. New 4th grade teacher Thomas Hambley declined to speak with KFSK, and secondary special education teacher Rosal Concepcion did not respond to invitations to be interviewed.
