Petersburg’s Borough Assembly has a long agenda ahead of its meeting at 6:00 p.m. tonight. At the start of the meeting, the Assembly, acting as the Board of Equalization, will hear any unsettled appeals of the 2024 property tax assessment.

Borough code says a successful appeal has to prove that valuation of a property was unequal, excessive, improper, or undervalued. More guidelines on how to file an appeal are listed on the Borough’s website.

After all property tax assessment appeals have been heard, the Assembly will hear a couple presentations from local officials. The Public Safety Advisory Board Report will speak on its funding recommendations for police department training.

Then, Petersburg Indian Association Tribal President Debra O’Gara will introduce PIA’s Council Members and give a short presentation about the Tribe’s ongoing projects.

In new business, the Assembly will complete its first reading of an ordinance to rezone four lots from Single Family Residential to Public Use. The Petersburg Children’s Center, a local childcare nonprofit, currently leases those lots from the Borough. The Center proposed the rezone to make room for the future development of its childcare and learning facilities. The project has the full support of Petersburg’s Planning Commission, which voted unanimously to recommend rezoning the property at its meeting last month.

The Assembly will also set a price for a section of Borough-owned tidelands to a local business. Brock Snider, the owner of Island Refrigeration, LLC, is seeking to buy an approximately 35,000 square foot lot near Dock St., behind Wikan Enterprises Inc. In his application, Snider wrote that he intends to build a marine refrigeration and electrical facility on the property. He said those facilities would serve the local commercial fishing fleet. Island Refrigeration LLC is offering $325,000 for the parcel, which has an appraised value of $414,000.

Also at tonight’s meeting, the Assembly will choose a date and time to hold a work session on the Borough’s proposed budget for fiscal year 2025.

The Petersburg Borough Assembly will meet at 6 p.m. today in the Assembly Chambers. KFSK will broadcast that meeting live and post the recording in our Borough Assembly Archive. Anyone can join the meeting in person, by phone, or on Zoom. There’s more information on KFSK’s community calendar.

And at noon today, KFSK’s Hannah Flor will host “Borough Business,” a live call-in show with Borough officials. If you have a question for today’s guests, the number to call is: (907) 772-3808.
