Petersburg has a new state champion after this weekend’s state swim meet in Anchorage. Freshman Lexie Tow took first place in the 100-yard breaststroke, with a time of one minute and seven point six eight seconds, shaving more than a second off her fastest time.

Lexie’s older brother, junior Logan Tow took 3rd in the boys 200 yard freestyle and 6th in the boys 500 yard freestyle. Junior Brooklyn Whitethorn competed in the girls 50 yard freestyle, freshman Bella Miller competed in the girls 500 yard freestyle. And Whitethorn, Miller, and Lexie Tow, along with freshman Cadence Flint, competed in the girls 200 yard medley relay race.

And in other sports news, Petersburg hosted a 2A volleyball conference this weekend. Eight teams from around Southeast, including Klawock, Hoonah, and Haines, played a total of 28 matches. They were competing for top spots in the Region V tournament in Craig later this month. The Petersburg Vikings started the conference off playing Wrangell, and lost that match. But they won the next one against Klawock. Friday night they lost to Metlakatla, but that was their last loss. By the time they ended the conference at 11 p.m. on Saturday night, they’d won five of their seven matches. Coach Jaime Cabral says the team is ranked in the middle of the pack for the Region V tournament.
