Petersburg’s annual Pedal/Paddle Battle, a fundraiser for the Petersburg Medical Center Foundation, raised over $25,000 on Aug 8. That’s the most the event has ever raised.
The Petersburg Medical Center Foundation helps provide continuing education scholarships for hospital staff and high schoolers going into the medical field.
“We’re so excited and so grateful because this has really filled the coffers,” said foundation president Sue Paulsen. “And when people say they would like to continue their studies and becoming a registered nurse, we can say ‘Yes, we would love to help with your tuition!’”
Paulsen said last year, the foundation awarded five scholarships to high school students.
During the Pedal/Paddle Battle, participants bike and kayak roughly six miles from Scow Bay to Sandy Beach. Participants are encouraged to find sponsors and collect donations for the event.
Community Wellness and Public Relations Manager Julie Walker said the event was a big success.
“We had great weather, good turnout, excellent fundraising. So yeah, it couldn’t have gone any better,” she said.
Walker said individual participants raised $6,500 this year, and the remaining $18,500 came from corporate sponsors.
