The Petersburg Borough has no local laws specifically against small cruise ships discharging waste water near town. The borough has a regulation against dumping materials in its harbors but it’s general in nature and there are no fines attached to it. The National Transportation Safety Board lists the probable cause of the July 25, 2018, capsizing of the Petersburg fish tender Pacific Knight as the captain’s “inadequate assessment” of the boat’s stability and risks related to vessel modifications, overloading and stability issues. The boat was tendering salmon in Bristol Bay last summer.

The Petersburg Borough Assembly is meeting Friday at 9 a.m. after they postponed last week’s meeting due to a lack of quorum. One of the issues on the agenda is a public hearing of an ordinance that would borrow up to $8 million from the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation for repairs and upgrades to the local water and sewer system.
