One person is dead after a fire consumed a house in Kake early Saturday morning. State authorities are investigating.

Friday marks the second payday when many federal workers are getting nothing. The partial federal shutdown began December 22. Some federal workers aren’t allowed to work and others are working but not getting paid. As KFSK’s Angela Denning reports, many local businesses in Petersburg have come forward to help.

The commercial fishery for Dungeness crab in Southeast Alaska was cut short in 2017 because harvests were low. 2018, however, has proven to be one of the best years in the last decade.

The partial government shutdown is affecting hundreds of U.S. Forest Service workers all over Southeast Alaska. In Petersburg, most of the 75 agency workers are furloughed. KFSK’s Angela Denning talks with a few of them about what it’s been like for their families.
