Four people have died in a vehicle wreck on the southern end of Mitkof Island, about 26 miles south of Petersburg.

Petersburg Volunteer Fire Department firefighters and EMTs along with multiple law enforcement agencies are responding today to a motor vehicle wreck on the south end of Mitkof Island with multiple fatalities.

Petersburg’s borough assembly Friday was split over another extension of a temporary local law for responding to civil emergencies. The 60-day extension passed on a 4-3 vote and the assembly changed the wording to clarify they’d have final say over public health measures. However, opposition to the ordinance continues.

The U.S. Coast Guard Sunday hoisted two people and two dogs from a remote bay south of Petersburg.

Understaffing and a heavy volume of mail have created long wait times during reduced hours at Petersburg’s Post Office this month. Customers report waiting in line, doing their best to social distance, for up to 45 minutes inside the facility. A post office spokesman said relief is coming but not until later this summer.
