Petersburg High School’s boys wrestling team was 14th at the state tournament in Anchorage last weekend, while the girls took 13th.

Representatives of an effort to seek land for Natives in five Southeast Alaska communities spoke briefly with Petersburg’s borough assembly this month and hope to have the support of the municipality.

Helicopters are flying this fall and winter over Kupreanof Island in central Southeast Alaska near Petersburg as the state surveys a remote road construction project. The Alaska Department of Transportation hopes to start construction on it next year.

Congress is set to send to the president appropriations bills that include continued payments to rural communities near national forest land, including here in Alaska.

The official position of the Petersburg borough on the roadless rule on the Tongass National Forest is no position at all. That’s after the assembly this fall could not agree on whether to support the status quo for protecting 9.2 million acres from logging and road building, or a full exemption for those lands.
