New hatchery chum fishing opportunities on tap in central Southeast

Many commercial salmon fishermen open their season in Southeast Alaska this weekend. Around the Petersburg area, purse seiners and trollers will have a chance at some new or increased hatchery chum salmon. All gear groups continue to see conservation measures to limit catches of Stikine River king salmon.

School board approves status quo budget with state funding in question

Petersburg’s school board Tuesday approved a spending plan for the fiscal year that starts in July. The board expects to revisit the budget once the final word on state funding comes out of the capital city this summer.

Assembly waits on property tax hike, but budgets for it

Petersburg’s borough assembly Monday decided to wait on raising property taxes but approved a budget with the higher tax rate built in. Local officials are anticipating the loss of state reimbursement for school project debt but want to wait as long as possible before raising the tax rate to cover that loss.

Petersburg fireworks law now with more fireworks

Petersburg’s borough assembly Monday made it three days a year that people can shoot off fireworks here without getting fined. Assembly members also added language to permit other displays for special occasions.
