Management numbers for king salmon in Southeast Alaska are up slightly from last year but will mean similar conservation measures to protect low returns to the region’s rivers.

As springtime awakes in Southeast Alaska, young hunters in Petersburg can learn about hunting and handling grouse and other small game birds in a class offered this month. It’s the first time an “Alaskans Afield” class has been offered here.

Petersburg’s planning commission this week talked about allowing more flexibility for land use under the borough’s newly approved development code. Property owners have sought allowances for continued residential use of land zoned for industry. Some are also questioning what types of affordable housing will be allowed on residential property under the new code.

Air ambulance company Guardian Flight says it has not been able to find three crew members who died in a crash of the company’s plane in Southeast Alaska in January.

Diesel generators in Petersburg and Wrangell have been turned off this week as the two communities are back solely on hydroelectric power for the first time in over a month.
