For the second year in a row, Petersburg won’t have its Memorial Day weekend king salmon sport fishing derby.

More than five months after it sent a letter seeking information on Tongass National Forest timber oversight the Petersburg borough has yet to receive a response.

A commercial herring spawn on kelp fishery is wrapping up near Craig on Prince of Wales Island in Southeast Alaska.

A consulting company is recommending more than seven million dollars in repair and replacement work in the long-term for Petersburg’s hydro-electric power plant at Blind Slough. The power plant on southern Mitkof Island is nearing the end of its first century but it continues to function as Petersburg’s cheapest source of electricity.

Petersburg’s borough assembly could look to revise old city law on fireworks this year. The assembly Monday agreed to ask the public safety advisory board for a recommendation on revising that local law, with input from the police and departments.
